Andolla Refuge
About
The story of this refuge starts in the year of construction of the Alpe Cavali reservoir.
The Edison Company, the building firm that in the sixties was absorbed by ENEL (The state electric company) built a chalet on the Andolla pastures as the summer holiday home of its employees.
The bui1din was inaugurated on July 9th,1925, in presence of Mr. Giovanni Rondolini, founder of the Villadossola branch of the UOEI. In 1938 the Edison Company donates it to the SEO-CAI association, with the possibility of access to the hikers group of Villadossola. On June 8th 1945. the C.A.I. branch of Villadossola is constituted.
On April 25th, 1948 the Antrona municipality donates the land where the refuge stands and on July 4th, the SEO from, Domodossola gives the rest of the building to the CAI branch of Villadossola.
The chance of a reference point for the mountain climbers in the Andolla massif gave the impulse to transform the old chalet into a refuge that was given the name "Rifugio Andolla" and was inaugurated on July 5th, 1953. In the following years, all the necessary improvements were undertaken the make the building hospitable.
In 1970 the Cheggio Andolla ropeway was opened. In 1967 a small hydroelectric power plant was set up. In 1971 the Foresters, the Antrona beekeepers and the CAI branch of Villadossola constituted the association "Alpi di Andolla" and two years later the construction of a big farm house was finished.
The mountain dwellers started using this building only in 1980. On Sept.14th 1986, some 1500 people took part in the "New Andolla Refuge" inauguration. In 1993 the old hydroelectric power plant was replaced by a more powerful one to face the new refuge's requirements. (See: Frangioni G., Andolla, storia di un rifugio, ed. C.A.I. sez.di Villadossola, 1993).
